What will the dog park look like?Go to the NEWS AND EVENTS page to see up-dated Site Plans
Who designed the dog park?Several meetings were held in 2005 & 2006 where anyone who wished to participate was invited to brainstorm regarding the design features they would like to see in Redlands’ first dog park. Once the ideas were gathered, the actual landscape design plan was generously donated by local Landscape Architect, Anna Allissi, of Green Gate Specialty Gardens. The park site and plans were reviewed by Richard Feenstra of R.A.C.O. Development in 2009. He then made recommendations to R.U.F.F. to cut construction costs. R.U.F.F. Board of Directors approved the changes.
How large will the dog park be?Approximately 1.2 acres.
Will there be separate areas for large and small dogs?Yes
Will there be parking?Yes, the design plan includes additional parking next to the dog park.
Who will operate the Redlands Dog Park? The City of Redlands will operate the park and provide basic maintenance. R.U.F.F. will assist the city in maintaining the park and will help with capital improvements. As with all city parks, people using the park do so at their own risk. The City and R.U.F.F. do not accept liability for any damage or injuries that occur while using the dog park.
How much will it cost to use the Redlands Dog Park?Although some communities do charge a fee to visit their dog parks, Redlands Dog Park will be free to all licensed dog owners with healthy friendly dogs who abide by the rules posted at the park.
How much money needs to be raised to build the dog park?Initial estimates were approximately $55,000 for materials. However, building costs have fluctuated and this number may have changed since our initial estimate. Also, this figure assumes we would have to purchase all of the materials. If the materials are donated in kind, the amount could be reduced significantly.
How much money has been raised? As of 11-16-09 $50,620
Why is the money on deposit with The Redlands Community Foundation?By making the donations for the Redlands Dog Park via The Redlands Community Foundation, the donations may be tax deductible to the donor (check with your tax advisor). All of the donations made for the Redlands Dog Park are being held by The Redlands Community Foundation in a Donor Advised Fund.
Can the dog park be built in phases? No. One of the requirements of the city was that the dog park construction not begin until all of the necessary funds had been raised.
What will the hours of the dog park be?All parks in the City of Redlands are open from 5 A.M. until 9 P.M. (City Ordinance 12.44).
Will the dog park be lit at night?Lighting is not included in our design plan due to a variety of environmental law hurdles we would have had to have cleared.
Won’t the dogs fight?Although altercations can occur, they are rare because the dog park is neutral territory. No dog feels obligated to protect it as ‘their own space’ because it belongs to everyone. Dogs are often coming and going and there is more than enough room for them to run and play. Also, dogs that are off-leash don’t feel trapped and are therefore less likely to respond to another dog in a defensive manner.
Will my dog need a license to come to the dog park?Yes. All dogs that reside in the City of Redlands are required to have a current license. Dog licenses are available at the City Treasurer’s Office for a nominal fee. You will need to bring proof that your dog is currently vaccinated for rabies with you when you apply for the dog license.
What if I don’t live in Redlands? Do I still need a license?Yes. You will need to have a current license from the community in which you live.
Where can I learn more about preparing for a visit to the dog park and dog park safety?See our Links page of the website.
